Expedition Research

Upgrading this technology allows you to go on more expeditions and to colonize more planets.

Helpful information:

  • Odd levels (1st, 3rd, 5th…) make it possible to colonize an extra planet (maximum 15).

  • The square root of the level of this technology shows how many simultaneous expeditions you can send.

  • Each level increases the maximum possible size of the planet during colonization.

My question:

Could I get a more detailed explanation of what "each level increases the maximum possible size of the planet during colonization" actually means?

Does this mean that higher research levels allow newly colonized planets to have more building fields? If so, how much does the maximum possible size increase per level?

Does this bonus only apply to newly colonized planets, or does it also affect existing planets?

Hello!

Here is how Expedition Research works in Classic:

1. Planet size. Each level adds +1 building field to planets you colonize after reaching that level. The base size of a new colony is random: 200–275 fields, multiplied by 1.3 (about 260–357 fields), plus your current research level. Planets you already own do not change.

2. Colonies. Odd levels (1, 3, 5...) give +1 colony slot: 9 planets at level 0, up to a maximum of 15.

3. Expeditions. The square root of the research level is the number of expeditions you can send at the same time.

So if you plan to colonize, it is worth raising the research first: every level makes the next colonies a little bigger.
