Helpful information:

Odd levels (1st, 3rd, 5th…) make it possible to colonize an extra planet (maximum 15).

The square root of the level of this technology shows how many simultaneous expeditions you can send.

Each level increases the maximum possible size of the planet during colonization.
My question:
Could I get a more detailed explanation of what "each level increases the maximum possible size of the planet during colonization" actually means?
Does this mean that higher research levels allow newly colonized planets to have more building fields? If so, how much does the maximum possible size increase per level?
Does this bonus only apply to newly colonized planets, or does it also affect existing planets?
