How it works. Upgrading involves continuously improving your ships and defenses at the “Upgrade Center.” Each unit can be upgraded up to level 100, and its combat stats increase with each level. The upgrade remains active as long as it is equipped.

Why? Each upgrade level is purchased with Mods (a special resource). The price increases with each level: Level 1 — 15 Mods, Level 10 — 25, Level 25 — 50, Level 50 — 180, Level 100 — 2,650 Mods per level. In total, fully upgrading a unit to level 100 requires about 50,330 Mods (for special ships and installations, it’s 1.5 times more expensive, about 75,500). Resetting an upgrade costs Antimatter.

What are the branches? Bonuses are divided into three branches: Attack, Armor, and Shields. Each level adds the branch’s main bonus, and at levels 10 and 25, additional bonuses are unlocked (additional attack, accuracy, armor repair, shield regeneration). Upgrades work the same way for almost all ships, turrets, and installations; for shield domes, only the Shield branch is active.

The Modernization Center is where you upgrade individual ships and defense: more attack, armor or shield. Upgrades are bought with a special resource — Mods, are permanent and raise combat power. Each unit takes up to 100 levels, split across three branches however you like — your personal build for the fleet role.

Three upgrade branches

Each branch has a base effect from level 1 plus extra bonuses that unlock at branch levels 10 and 25. Per-level gain differs: shields grow fastest, attack slowest — but attack matters most in battle.

How it works

100 levels per unit
Up to 100 levels total per unit, split between attack, armor and shield as you choose.
Paid with Mods
Main resource is Mods. If short, you can top up the difference with Antimatter.
Reset — with Antimatter
You can reset and re-allocate. Invested Mods are refunded; the reset costs 2.5% of them in Antimatter.
Prime units & domes
Modernizing the prime fleet and prime defense (Hunter, Cerberus, Titan and their defense) costs 1.5× more. Shield domes only use the Shields branch.

Mods needed to upgrade

Each next level costs more than the last. Cumulative cost to reach a level (standard unit; prime is 1.5× more):

Level Standard unit Prime (×1.5)
25 725 1,088
50 3,310 4,965
75 13,050 19,575
100 50,330 75,495

Full upgrade (100 levels) — 50,330 Mods for a standard unit, 75,495 for a prime one.

Questions and answers

How many branches are there in Xterium in total?
The game has 3 branches. They are split into 1 groups: Modernization Branches — 3.
What is modernization in Xterium?
This is a permanent improvement of ships and defense in the “Modernization Center”. Each unit is modernized up to level 100, and with each level its combat stats grow.
What does modernization cost and what do you pay with?
Each level is bought with Mods. The price grows: lv.1 — 15 Mods, lv.10 — 25, lv.25 — 50, lv.50 — 180, lv.100 — 2650 per level. Fully upgrading one unit to level 100 — about 50,330 Mods (for special ships and installations it is 1.5 times more expensive). Resetting a modernization costs Antimatter.
What modernization branches are there?
Three: Attack (+1% to attack per level), Armor (+2% to armor per level) and Shields (+4% to shield per level). At levels 10 and 25 additional bonuses open up — extra attack and accuracy, restoration and active armor, penetration and shield regeneration.
Up to what level and for which units?
Up to level 100. Modernization works almost the same for all ships, turrets and installations; for shield domes only the shield branch works (they have no weapons).
