Upgrades make your ships and defenses stronger: more attack, armor, or shields. You can upgrade them at the Upgrade Center using a special resource called Mods. Below is how it works and what each branch offers. All numbers are taken from the game code.

Where the data comes from. The percentages, level caps, and conditions are taken directly from the game engine (the War of Alliances universe). The cards can be found in the Upgrades section of the encyclopedia.

How Upgrades Work

  • Upgrades are performed at the Modernization Center. This is a separate building designed to improve combat performance.
  • Upgrades are paid for with Mods. Mods are the primary resource for upgrades. If you don't have enough Mods, you can make up the difference with Antimatter.
  • The level cap is 100. Each skill tree can be leveled up to level 100.
  • The effect is permanent. The bonus remains on the ship or defense forever. If you wish, you can reset the level—for antimatter.
  • The price increases with each level. The higher the level, the more expensive the next one is. For some heavy units, upgrades cost 1.5 times as much.

Three Paths to Modernization

Leveling up follows three paths. Each path has a base bonus from the start and additional effects that unlock at levels 10 and 25.

BranchBase Effect (per level)What comes next
Attack+1% to attackAt level 10—more powerful additional and energy shots; at level 25—higher accuracy
Armor+2% to armorLevel 10 and up — armor regeneration in battle; Level 25 and up — active armor
Shields+4% to the boardStarting at Level 10 — shield penetration and effectiveness; starting at Level 25 — shield regeneration

In other words, the rate of increase varies by stat: shield increases the fastest (+4%), armor at an average rate (+2%), and attack the slowest (+1%)—but attack is usually more valuable in combat, which is why it’s “more expensive” in percentage terms.

A special case: domes

For defensive shield domes, only the Shield branch is active (they have no attack capabilities at all). For them, upgrading is a way to make the shield even stronger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of modernization? For Mods. If you don't have enough Mods, you can make up the shortfall with Antimatter.

What's the highest level you can reach? Up to 100 on each branch.

Is the bonus temporary or permanent? Forever. But you can reset the level using Antimatter if you want to redistribute the points.

Which branch is more important? It depends on the fleet's role: attack for offensive fleets, armor and shield for survivability. For more details on how bonuses are calculated, see the article How Bonuses Are Calculated.
